The best sports headphones for your workout

Finding the best workout headphones(Photo: Wavebreak Media)Sweatproof, slip-free personal sound systems for rocking your fitness routine.

When you're working out solo, good music is the perfect partner. It can motivate you, inspire you, and carry you through pain to new personal bests. But it's hard to find headphones that can stay on through—or survive—a solid sweat session. After all, sweat can ruin more delicate headphones.
Not to worry, though. Several companies are taking note, making water-resistant, sweatproof headphones that can handle a marathon or a brutal CrossFit regimen, and even rinse clean when the work is done.
There are a few important considerations when choosing fitness headphones, namely fit, sound quality and where you'll use them.

For indoor workouts, like the gym, in-ear headphones are the best. You want them to block out all the ambient noise—grunting, weights clanking, the incessant whir of stationary bikes and treadmills—to focus on the task at hand. In-ear headphones fit snugly into the ear canal, like earplugs, preventing those outside noises from interrupting your flow. Because they better seal off the ear, you can keep the volume lower on your mp3, iPod or smartphone, allowing you richer sound without blasting your tunes.

If you’re running or cycling outside, open-back earphones—especially earbuds, clip-ons and some neckband designs—that sit just outside the ear canal allow you to hear some ambient sounds, like traffic and other potential hazards (a bear on the trail, perhaps) to keep you out of harm’s way.
For workout headphones to be good, they need to sound great—deep and clear bass notes, tonal clarity and rich, sharp highs—and be stable during exercise, otherwise you’re wasting time fiddling with gear, the workout suffers, and you’re frustrated. Almost all headphones are sold with several pairs of ear tips—many with antimicrobial treatments to reduce the buildup of bacteria—that allow the user to dial in the best fit, no matter the activity. Add the structural back up of an ear clip, hook or neckband, and those personal speakers aren’t going anywhere.
These are 8 of the best workout headphones available. We ranked them based on sound quality, apparent durability, online consumer reviews and price. When you add it all up, it comes down to value. Where two different headphones had comparably good sound and one cost twice as much, we ruled in favor of the cheaper pair.  Where the price was in the same range, the better-performing pair takes the cake. It's that simple. We believe that all will stand up to sweat, stay in your ears and deliver top-notch sound through workout after workout. So queue up your playlist, and get ready to rock out on your workout.

Mathew, a source told us, has become the only topic Genny discusses on daily basis and also, they say, her 33rd birthday was put together by the businessman who has strong passion for entertainment and is ready to invest in it now that he’s set to have one as a spouse.

“There is a high possibility that Genevieve may end up in Mathew Mensah’s house before the end of this year, possibly, December” a close source revealed!

How true is this? Only Genny can disclose!

Nigerian Lawmakers Top Salaries Chart

Nigerian federal legislators receive much higher salaries than their counterparts in wealthier countries and key developing nations, according to an analysis published by the Economist magazine.
A Nigerian legislator receives an annual salary of about $189,000, equivalent of N30 million, which is 116 times the country's gross domestic product (GDP) per person, says the publication which was posted on the magazine's website on Friday.
The figures put salaries collected by Nigerian senators and members of the House of Representatives way ahead of those received by fellow parliamentarians in the 29 countries whose data was analysed by the Economist.
In terms of volume of cash earnings, the Nigerian legislators beat their counterparts in Britain who take $105,400 yearly, as well as those in the United States ($174,000), France ($85,900), South Africa ($104,000), Kenya ($74,500), Saudi Arabia ($64,000) and Brazil ($157,600).
In terms of lawmakers' salaries as a ratio of GDP per capita, the gap is even much wider. While the salary of a Nigerian lawmaker is 116 times the country's GDP per person, that of a British member of parliament is just 2.7 times.
The report said Britain's legislators pay is "relatively parsimonious" when compared with that of their counterparts in poorer countries, including Nigeria, who "enjoy the heftiest salaries by this measure."
According to the data, only Australian lawmakers, with $201,200 annual salary, receive higher amounts compared to Nigerian legislators, but their salaries are only 3 times their country's GDP per person.
Other yearly salary details published by the Economist are those of lawmakers in Ghana ($46,500), Indonesia ($65,800), Thailand ($43,800), India ($11,200), Italy ($182,000), Bangladesh ($4,000), Israel ($114,800), Hong Kong ($130,700), Japan ($149,700), Singapore ($154,000), Canada ($154,000), New Zealand ($112,500), Germany ($119,500), Ireland ($120,400), Pakistan ($3,500), Malaysia ($25,300), Sweden ($99,300), Sri Lanka ($5,100), Spain ($43,900) and Norway ($138,000).
Secretive
The National Assembly has been secretive with the specific amounts members collect in salaries and allowances, refusing to provide information to journalists and activists even when requests are made under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
A total of N150 billion was voted for the National Assembly in the 2013 national budget but there is no breakdown, which should have shown at least a summary of the legislators' earnings.
Months ago, Daily Trust wrote a letter under FOIA requesting for the National Assembly's budget breakdown but this was refused.
However, Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) documents in possession of Daily Trust show that a senator is entitled to N35 million and member of the House of Representatives N29.28 million in the first year of each legislative session when they receive allowances that are payable once in four years--accommodation, furniture and car allowances.
The annual salaries are supposed to be lower for the next three years of a parliamentary session.
But given the secretive nature of the parliament's finances, there have been claims, including by RMAFC leadership, that the lawmakers receive much more than this amount in padded allowances.
Based on the RMAFC documents dated February 2007, which are the subsisting approved packages for National Assembly members, the lawmakers' allowances include accommodation (Senator N4m, Rep N3.97m), vehicle loan (Senator N8m, Rep N6.948m), furniture (Senator N6m, Rep N5.956m) and severance gratuity (Senator N6m, Rep N5.956m), which are due once in four years.
Other allowances, which are payable every year, are car maintenance (Senator N1.52m, Rep N595,563), constituency (Senator N5m, Rep N1.687m), domestic staff (Senator N1.5m, Rep N1.488m), personal assistant (Senator N506,600; Rep N496,303), entertainment (Senator N202,640, Rep N198,521), recess (Senator N202,640; Rep N198,521), utilities (Senator N607,920; Rep N397,042), newspaper/periodicals (Senator N303,960; Rep N297,781), house maintenance (Senator N101,320; Rep N99,260) and ward robe (Senator N405,280; Rep N397,402)
There are also estacode (Senator $600, Rep $550) and duty tour allowance (Senator N23,000; Rep N21,000) payable per day when a lawmaker is on official trip.
"Untenable"
In February 2009, then-President Umaru Yar'Adua initiated a process of reducing the pay packages of public office holders on the ground that the amounts were untenable in view of government's finances.
Months later, then-chairman of RMAFC Engr. Hamman Tukur presented a report to Yar'Adua, containing reviewed pay packages for federal, state and local government political, public and judicial office holders.
In the report, Tukur said the affected government organs were flouting the remuneration provisions made by the commission through frivolous foreign trips, arbitrary appointment of aides and use of excessively large motorcades. He warned that this must stop.
Based on the constitution, RMAFC has the final say on the remuneration package of National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly members, while a law needs to be enacted based on the commission's proposals regarding the pay packages of executive and judicial office holders.
But Daily Trust understands that the National Assembly and other arms of government have refused to implement the reduced packages on the grounds that the constitution says earnings of political officers should not be reviewed to their disadvantage.

Apple developer site taken down after hacker attempts access

Apple Inc.'s developer site is unavailable for software engineers after a hacker tried to steal personal information, the company said.

Apple took the website, used by programmers who write applications for iPhones, Macs and other products, off-line on July 18 in order to fix the issue, the company said in an online statement.

Developers who use the site for software downloads, documentation and engineering information could face delays in introducing their own products. Some of the information is encrypted and Apple hasn't been able to rule out whether names, mailing addresses or email addresses may have been accessed, the company said.

"Having your partners get breached in a hacking attempt is a serious loss of trust for developers," Frank Yu, Beijing-based chief executive officer of app developer Kwestr, said in an email today. "Apple has responded well to allay those fears."

Apple said it would extend memberships for any users if their accounts were due to expire while the website is off-line. The Cupertino, California-based maker of iPhones and iPads said to prevent a security threat like this from happening again it's "completely overhauling" its developer systems.

"This event shows that our private information and our developer account may be leaked," said Cui Tong, a Beijing- based iOS developer who works for photo-sharing app PaPa. "I hope Apple will spend more time and resources on security to protect our private information."

The Pentagon cleared Apple devices for use on its networks in May, approving the use of government-issued Apple products running a version of the iOS 6 mobile platform. Some Samsung Electronics Co. and BlackBerry products are also approved for military sales.

The approval demonstrates Apple's "commitment to deliver a secure platform to our enterprise and government customers," the company said at the time.

Nigeria's Super Rich - How They Make, Spend Their Money

Some of Nigeria's super rich.
To make wealth is an achievement; the way it is spent is style. In most cases, successful individuals who have created wealth through wise and diligent investments in business hardly squander their money. They usually prefer to reinvest their capital, including the accrued profit over the years, into their businesses to increase their asset base and level of affluence.
The tendency, therefore, is that the richer they are, the more their business interests expand. In line with this corporate tradition, the rich investors get richer and, when they spend, they do so in a big way worthy of mention. This is because of the extensive attention attracted by their rare wherewithal and will to spend, including doling out money on humanitarian grounds. Among Nigeria's privileged people are:
Aliko Dangote
Nigerian business tycoon Aliko Dangote is the richest man in Africa. He is the founder, Dangote Group, West Africa's largest publicly listed conglomerate with diverse business interests such as sugar refining, flour milling, textiles, real estate and salt processing. Dangote Cement, Dangote Foods (noodles) and Dansa Juice complete the chain. His total net worth is about $16.1 as at March 2013.
Dangote spends money in philanthropic activities. He has stepped up his philanthropy in recent years, giving over $100 million to causes ranging from education and health through flood relief, poverty alleviation to the arts. He acquired a private jet in April 2010 as a personal gift on the occasion of his 53rd birthday. The Bombardier Global Jet Express XRS (one out of a few) was estimated to cost $45 million. Dangote is also said to have purchased a private luxury yatch at the cost of $43 million made exclusively for his enjoyment. The yatch is named Mariya after his mother.
Mike Adenuga
Otunba Mike Adenuga built his fortune in business from banking, mobile telecom service and oil. He founded Globacom, now Nigeria's second largest mobile phone network, in 2006. Globacom has more than 24 million subscribers in Nigeria, and also operates in the Republic of Benin. Adenuga made his first fortune at the young age of 26 in the 1970s by distributing lace and other materials. He later had another opportunity to expand his fortune during the military regime of Ibrahim Babangida when he was awarded a contract for the construction of military barracks in some military installations in the country. He is presently worth $4.7 billion, thus justifying him as one of Nigeria's super-rich businessmen.
Adenuga is a philanthropist who spends a lot of money on selfless activities aimed at bringing succour and assistance to less-privileged people. Adenuga also takes his philanthropic goodwill to the area of sports development in Nigeria and Africa through his selfless investments in sports. His demonstration of philanthropic largesse cuts across sponsorship of Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) and the Super Eagles. This was one of the points highlighted by President Goodluck Jonathan at his (Adenuga's) 60th birthday. "You are celebrating 60 years of a remarkable life filled with monumental achievements in high entrepreneurship, philanthropy and dedicated service to God and country," the president said.
Similarly, the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Mr Issah Hayatou, used the occasion of Adenuga's birthday celebration to appreciate his contributions to the society. He recognised that Adenuga had not only affected Africa positively through his accomplishments in business but has also been the pillar of sports on the continent.
Adenuga loves spending money on what gives him joy. It could be said that, partly for this reason, he acquired a private Bombardier Global Express jet, fitted with the latest flight facilities. It is one of the most luxuriously built private jets in the world, just like that of Dangote.
Jim Ovia
Jim Ovia started building his fortunes when he founded Zenith Bank Group in 1990. The bank has grown to become West Africa's second largest financial service provider by market capitalisation and asset base. His sources of wealth are banking, telecommunication and real estate investment.
He also owns Quantum Luxury Properties Limited, a private equity fund with special focus on Africa. Ovia's total net worth is about $825 million.
He has embarked on the establishment of a free, co-educational high school, James Hope College, in Delta State, the place where he pondered his future as a young man. The school, an 18-month project, launches in September with an initial capacity for 420 students. He is also the founder of Mankind United To Support Total Education (MUSTE), an organisation providing scholarships for the underprivileged.
Abdussamad Rabiu
Lagos-based business tycoon Abdulsamad Rabiu is a son of Khalifa Isiyaku Rabiu, one of Nigeria's most successful businessmen in the 1970s. Little wonder therefore that he followed in his father's footsteps in business with interest in importing basic commodities such as rice, sugar and cement in the 1980s.
Abdussamad heads the BUA Group, a conglomerate with $1.9 billion in revenues and interests in sugar refining, vegetable oil processing and flour mills. The BUA Group also operates the BUA Cement, Nigeria's first floating cement terminal, as well as Nigerian Oil Mill which processes edible oil. According to Forbes magazine report, he is the 21st richest African and is worth $675 million.
Folorunsho Alakija
Billionaire oil tycoon, fashion designer and philanthropist, Mrs Folorunsho Alakija is worth at least $3.3 billion against a recent Forbes' rating which quoted her net worth as $600 million. She began her professional career in the 1970s as secretary of defunct International Merchant Bank of Nigeria, one of the country's earliest investment banks.
In the early 1980s when banking was seen as one of the most lucrative jobs, she took a bold step towards realisation of her personal dreams by quitting her job in the bank to study Fashion Design in England. She returned to Nigeria a few years later to establish Supreme Stitches, a high-profile fashion firm which provides special services to exclusive clientele. She also founded Rose of Sharon Foundation, a charity organisation.
This fashion design business led her into fortune. She was in a position to make and sell high-level clothing to the fashionable wives of some military big shots and other society women.
In May 1993, Mrs Alakija set out for oil business. It was then she applied for an allocation of oil prospecting licence (OPL) to explore 617,000-acre block granted to her company, Famfa Oil Limited. However, at that time, she had no experience in oil exploration -- she was just a new entrant in the business.
Also, Mrs Alakija is widely reported to own a private jet, Bombardier Global Express 6000 which cost about $46 million, added to acquisition of a property at Hyde Park. This is one of the ways she spends her wealth, which gives her happiness. Furthermore, she is a philanthropist who derives joy in giving assistance to widows and other less-privileged in society.
Tony Elumelu
Mr Tony Elumelu (CON) was born in Jos on March 22, 1963. He is a renowned economist, banker, investor and generous philanthropist. Elumelu is a recognised African leader in corporate business. After leading United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc to a higher level with the acquisition of Standard Trust Bank (STB) during the consolidation of the banking industry in 2005, he retired from the management of UBA in July 2010.
On establishment of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, he stated the foundation's objective as to "prove that the African private sector can itself be primary generator of economic development". Among the roles of the foundation are deployment of resources to generate reliable solutions to the business constraints that derail and clog the growth of business in the private sector in Africa.
Moreover, Elumelu ploughs a lot of resources in philanthropic activities. Apart from the Tony Elumelu Foundation, he was also a member of the World Economic Forum's Regional Agenda Council on Africa. He is also part of the Bretton Woods Committee which brings leaders in the global banking industry together. Voluntary development of human capital is one of the cherished interests where Elumelu spends his wealth. He also partners with the Tony Blair Africa Governance Initiative (AGI) with high focus on strengthening the role of the private sector in economic transformation policies of some African countries. This partnership is named Blair-Elumelu Fellowship Programme.
Elumelu, the originator of the concept of Africapitalism as an economic philosophy that reflects the commitment of players in the private sector towards the economic transformation of Africa through long-term investment, is a consummate patriot with a full-blown obsession for how he can make his country and continent a better part of the world.
Interest in paying family hospital bills, unpaid school fees, providing for families who cannot provide their needs -- all form part of what Elumelu does through his catalytic philanthropic method of assisting human beings within the shores of Nigeria and Africa.
Hajiya Bola Shagaya
Hajiya Bola Shagaya is hailed as one of Nigeria's richest businesswomen. She is the CEO of Bolmus International Limited. She has interests in several sectors ranging from oil and gas, banking, cash crops export, real estate, fast-moving consumer goods and photography.
She has been a very influential figure in Nigeria's corridors of power for decades and has excelled in a society where the role of women has been restricted traditionally. Her rise to affluence and power is not attributed to parental or marital influence. This woman of means has skilfully built her network and wealth from a humble background, and has proven herself as an outstanding power broker with impressive entrepreneurial skills.
In the manner of an astute entrepreneur, she saw opportunities in the populous image-conscious Nigerian market, prompting the expansion of her Konica marketing operations to photo laboratory services; that was the birth of another of her companies - Fotofair (Nigeria) Limited. Today, Fotofair is a leading photo laboratory company in Nigeria with over 30 laboratories spread across the nation.
Hajiya, as she is fondly called, has impressively carved her path in the sixth-largest oil producer's oil and gas sector. As far back as the late 1980s, during the Gen. Ibrahim Babangida-led military administration, she had steered her oil and gas company through the highly connected and contested Nigerian oil and gas sector to secure allocations for oil blocks. Thus began her reign as an indigenous oil marketer.
Around 2005, she became the managing director of Practoil Limited and, in 2011, she founded another exploration company, Voyage Oil and Gas Limited.
Shagaya, who is of Yoruba extraction, a tribe distinguished as party enthusiasts of the over 200 tribes in Nigeria, often attends the biggest social events dressed in "anko" with Nigeria's first ladies -- a local practice of Nigerian women indicating bosom friendship by wearing the same traditional attire especially to social functions.
The one-time patron of the Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria (FADAN) is a collector and retailer of the finest and most exquisite jewelleries from different fashion capitals of the world. "I love fashion, artworks and beautification endeavours," she said.
The graceful billionaire is not all about heavy-weight work. "I'm also a lover of sports, especially Polo", she said. She has consistently supported Polo tournaments in Nigeria over the years.
Femi Otedola
Femi Otedola is the CEO of African Petroleum Plc. He was one of only two Nigerians (alongside Aliko Dangote) to appear on the 2009 Forbes list of 793 dollar-denominated billionaires in the world, with an estimated net worth of over US$1.2 billion. Femi Otedola is the Nigerian president and chief executive officer of Zenon Petroleum and Gas limited.
Forbes magazine estimates Femi Otedola's net worth at $1.2 billion and ranks him as the 601st richest person in the world. According to Encomium magazine, Femi Otedola's net worth is $3.5 billion.
He owns a private jet called Challenger Global 5000 and a yatch almost similar to Dangote's named Nana after his wife.
Emeka Offor
Sir Emeka Offor, as he is often addressed rarely grants interviews, rather, he prefers his works, businesses and philanthropy to speak for him.
His multi-million business interest, Chrome Group, is a multifaceted organisation which originally started as an engineering outfit handling projects such as refinery maintenance, has today become by the grace of God, a conglomerate with diverse interests in Oil and Gas, Finance/Investments, Telecommunications, Insurance, Maritime, Destination Inspection, Real Estate and the Power Sector.
He once said in a newspaper interview that he is a son of a policeman, born in Kafanchan in Kaduna State. Offor is a goal-getter and founder of Sir Emeka Offor Foundation, a platform through which he doles out millions of naira for philanthropic purposes.
A member of Rotary International and deeply involved in the 4 cardinal pursuits of the Rotary Foundation, which are; peace and Conflict Management, Maternal and Child Death, Basic Education and Literacy, and Polio and Guinea Worm Eradication. He has made an outstanding donation of 250,000 USD for Peace studies at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand, $250,000 for Polio eradication; $250,000 for Guinea worm eradication; and another $250,000 for Women empowerment programmes in Nigeria. He was inducted into the Foundation Circle of the Arch Klumph Society of the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, an honour reserved for individuals who have donated over $250,000 to its causes. Through his Foundation, he has donated over $1 million, making him the highest donor from Africa.

Haia: Women shouldn’t work after 7 p.m.

RIYADH: FAISAL AL-DAKHEEL
The chief of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (Haia), Abdul Latif Al-Asheikh, says women should only work until 7 p.m. because working late hours affects their family life. He says it is also not good for men to work shifts that end late at night.
Al-Asheikh said it was unacceptable for women to work until midnight. “Women should work reasonable hours in order to lead normal lives with their families.”
He said that “current working hours in the marketplace are deeply disorganized, and unlike work regulations in other parts of the world.”
“Men and women salespersons are not given their human and familial rights and are made to work long hours. Workers in the marketplace simply do not have rights.
“Workers in stores are subjected to practices tantamount to slavery. If the Ministry of Labor is serious about working in the public interest and helping localize jobs for Saudi citizens, it has to set regulations for working hours like developed countries,” Al-Asheikh said.
“Our lives, first and foremost, revolve around obeying the commands of Allah.
We are supposed to build healthy family lives. For a man or a woman to work two shifts, from the morning until noon, and from the afternoon until midnight, ruins their family life and (violates their) rights,” he said.
The Haia chief said he supports initiatives to provide “decent jobs for Saudi women that can help them lead respectable lives without seeking financial help from others.” But there are “proper ways to do this. I recommend that stores close at 7 p.m., like the rest of the world. Of course there will be exceptions, but these too can be set within reasonable hours,” he said.
“But for a woman to leave work at late hours in the night is not safe for her. There are religious strictures that prohibit this. Many citizens are reluctant to work because they simply can’t stay for long hours away from their homes. They have duties to their families and to themselves,” he said.
He said the Haia was working with the Ministry of Labor to ensure Saudi women are employed at woman accessory and clothing stores in the country “in a safe and proper working environment. Women should work in legal jobs sanctioned by Shariah law, and should be protected from being used.”
He said the Haia plans to take action against stores where barriers between men and women are transparent.

Underage Marriage Petition: Activist Gathers 15,000 Signatures

photo
A US-based online activist, Eme Awa, has collected more than 15,000 signatures needed to petition the United Nations over the  Senate’s passage of a resolution to retain the provision of Section 29 (4) (b) of the 1999 Constitution.
Under the section, a married underage girl is deemed to be an adult. With the retention of the contentious provision in the constitution, the section can be interpreted to mean that even a day old child,  once married, would be considered to be an adult.
Awa started the collection of signatures on July 17 on change.org, a go-to site for web protests.  International organisations, such as Amnesty International and the Humane Society, have at one time or the other hosted their petitions on the website.
The petition organiser says she has made contacts with a top official at the United Nations who,  according to her,  is willing to assist with a formal presentation of the online petitions when the required number is attained. The petition is titled, United Nations: Stop The Nigerian Senate from Making Under-Age Marriage Law.
“Keep urging others to sign up. The more in number we are, the better the outcome. We are making progress with this petition. Please share it, take it with you to churches or mosques. Let’s make the people’s power count for once,’’ Eme explains on the website.
Many Nigerians have been besieged with the web link on their BlackBerry Messenger, electronic mail box, Facebook and other social networking sites to join the campaign and ultimately append their signatures to the petition.
Bloggers such as Linda Ikeji and Ladun Liadi also featured the link to the petition signing website on their blogs, a move that has seen the campaign attract an appreciable level of support from Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora.
One of those who signed the petition, Okiemute Patrick, who according to information provided on the site, is based in Lagos, says, “I do not understand why right thinking grown up men will allow for this perversion. What possible gratification can one get from marrying or sleeping with a child?
“I do not get it. Shouldn’t more pressing things be passed into law? Please, let us allow children be children and not rob them of their innocence simply because there are ‘men needs!”

Nigeria: I Wasn't Used and Dumped - Yvonne Nelson

interview

Yvonne Nelson
For sexy Ghanaian actress, Yvonne Nelson, heartbreak is a painful experience best avoided. Not exactly in the mood to relive her sensational breakup with popular Afro-hip hop act, Iyanya, she ended up doing so just to set the records straight. The actress was in the country to premiere her latest movie, "House of Gold" at the Silverbird Cinema, Lagos, yesterday, and opened up on sundry issues. Now bears Nigerian name, Damilola: Excerpt:
How are you enjoying your stay in Nigeria?
Did I tell you I'm half-Nigerian and half-Ghanaian? I was given a Nigerian name recently which makes me half-Nigerian. My Nigerian name is Damilola. It has been wonderful, I always say Nigeria is like a home for me. When I'm here, I do not feel like going back home again. But it's just that everything seems to be faster here.
You are in the country to premiere your latest movie. What's the movie all about?
The movie is titled, 'House of Gold.' It is a family-oriented comedy, and I want people to come and see two of Africa's music stars Ice Prince and Omawumi make their debut in a movie. I produced the movie in partnership with Media Ghana.
"House of Gold" tells the story of Dan Ansah Williams, a high-flying entrepreneur, business mogul, polygamist and socialite who is battling with cancer and has six weeks to live. With the help of his long-time associate and legal representative, he embarks on a mission to recall all his children, most of whom were born out of wedlock, back home.
Dan's last wish is to have all his children under one roof for seven days so they will get to know one another and bond due to the fact that they share the same blood line. However, that reunion proves a little more than everyone bargained for as each child indeed returns with an agenda, and this sets the stage for the most hilarious and bizarre seven days of their lives. I'm urging people to come and see the movie because they are going to laugh and have a nice time.
How did you get Ice Prince and Omawumi to star in the movie?
It was very challenging given the fact that they are busy people, always performing at shows. I have my own way of doing things. I spoke to them and they gave me their time and schedules, so I worked with it. We spent about 15 days on set.
Your first movie, 'Single and Married' was also directed by Paschal Amanfo, what do you have with him?
Paschal is one of the best directors in Ghana. He is a very straightforward director and it's very easy working with him. You would like to work with somebody who helps make things go smoothly while on set.
What's your experience like working with Ice Prince and Omawumi on set?
They were amazing on set. Ice Prince was the one who really shocked me because he had a show a night before joining us on set. He did not even sleep, as he took the next flight to Ghana and the moment he stormed the set, he started reading his script and mastering his lines. Omawumi was so good that I was tempted to ask her why she's not into acting in Nigeria. I also had the funniest Nigerian actor,Francis Odega, on set.

Between Boko Haram and advocates of child marriage

Between Boko Haram and advocates of child marriage

Members of the boko haram sect
Now, I can understand why those who have been killing schoolchildren in the North-Eastern part of the country could be so audacious.
As we are told, their main grouse is with western education and the attendant western way of life.  In fact, Boko Haram, the name by which members of the Jamā’a Ahl al-sunnah li-da’wa wa al-jihād)are commonly known, translates to “western education is sinful”  These insurgents that have wittingly turned parts of the North into a killing field of sorts are clearly out to fight everyone that may have acquired western education or is perceived to live in some westernised way, but to be totally impactful, they aspire for more.   Their style has also shown the desperation to stop Northern children from acquiring education after which they plan to conquer the whole of Nigeria and force all of us to stop sending our children to school.
Recently, I was wondering how these insurgents got this far in the execution of their evil plan, especially in the lifetime of so many respected traditional, religious and political leaders in the region. Now, I know how.  How would a society with the Yerimas of this world join the fight against Boko Haram when its defeat would most likely compel parents to educate their children, including girl-children, which would deny them the opportunity to defile as many teenage girls as would last their entire lifetime? Now, I see the tacit approval, albeit through silence, of the need to stop children from getting educated, since the education of girls remains the greatest threat to their paedophiliac perversions. Now, I see why they cannot speak against the evils in the North.  The complicity of Senator Sani Yerima and his cohorts was exposed on the floor of the Senate last Tuesday.
In the strict sense of it, the Senate did not pass any law having regard to legalising child marriage on Tuesday, July 18, 2013 or at any time for that matter. Let us go through the events of that day to have a better understanding.  Amongst many other provisions, the Senator Ike Ekweremadu committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution had recommended the amendment of a part of Section 29 which deals with the renunciation of Nigerian citizenship. S.29(1) prescribes that Nigerians who are of “full age” would be at liberty to renounce their citizenship provided they met certain other conditions which are enumerated in the succeeding subsections. However, while S.29 (4a) prescribes that: “full age means the age of 18 years and above”, 29(4b) states that “any woman who is married shall be deemed to be of full age.” The committee sought the deletion of the clause 29 (4b) apparently with the understanding that many girls are forced into marriage before their 18th birthday and that since 18 signifies adulthood in various other parts of our national life, it would be improper to afford girls who cannot obtain driving licences, cannot vote or be voted for, the opportunity to renounce their citizenship on the basis of their marital status.
Senators voted overwhelmingly for the deletion of this repugnant provision and all was well until Senator Yerima, a former Governor of Zamfara State, reputed to have travelled to Egypt to marry a 13-year-old girl in 2010, stood up to protest the “injustice” in the deletion of S29(4b). Waving the religious card, Yerima who was evidently prepared for his intervention, told his colleagues how Chapter IV of the 1999 Constitution guarantees the right of every Nigerian to privacy, freedom of expression and religion and how deleting this provision would trample on the belief of Muslims that any married girl is of full age. He also reminded them that Item 61 under Part1 of the Second Schedule of the 1999 Constitution otherwise known as the Exclusive legislative list forbids the Senate from prescribing laws related to the “formation, annulment and dissolution of marriages…” contracted under Islamic and customary law. With this well-orchestrated argument and the confidence that he would have won a few more people to his side, Yerima and his supporters armtwisted the Senate President, David Mark, into calling for another rounds of voting and the rest is history.
I have listened to arguments about why Nigerians do not need to worry about the failure of the Senate to delete this provision of the Constitution especially since the Section 277 of the Child Rights Act, 2003 defines a minor as anyone under 18 years of age and Sections 21, 22 and 23 of the same law outlaws and criminalises child marriage, but last Tuesday’s event makes that position a precarious one. This is because the provisions of the Child Rights Acts cannot override any part of the constitution as stated in Chapter 1 of the constitution. More than that, people who are determined to have children as brides would employ provisions of the constitutions as borrowed by Yerima to justify their actions.
It is also important to know that 10 years after the National Assembly passed the Child Rights Acts, 12 out of the 36 states in Nigeria have not adopted the law and 11 of these 12 states are in Northern Nigeria. The implication of this is that we cannot currently depend on the Child Rights Act in the definition of age for the attainment of adulthood in Nigeria as the violation of the rights of children would most likely go without restitution in any and all of the states which have not passed the law.
What happened at the Senate last week, however, presents everyone who is interested in the future of Nigeria an opportunity to come together and campaign for the domestication of the Child Rights Law in all states. In addition to mounting pressure on governments in these states, stakeholders must mobilise to enlighten parents and the general populace on the need to secure the future of our children by requesting the passage of the law in their states. We must let them see the education of the girl child as important to making to their own future. That with the singular instrument of education, it is possible to tackle the dangers of poverty, income inequalities, underdevelopment, gender disparities, vesicovagina fistula, child morality, illiteracy, gender-based violence and even harmful traditional practices which all diminish our country’s development.
The event also brought one of the booby traps in the 1999 Constitution to light, which is Item 61 of Part 1, under the Second Schedule. I am confident that there would be so many other such provisions injected into the constitution to satisfy the selfish interest of some Nigerians.  It is the right time for every right-thinking member of the National Assembly to speak against every little provision that compromises our future. It is one of those occasions that we would not mind the throwing of chairs in the chambers.  It is the moment for members of the House of Representatives to show that they are not mere grandstanders.  It is the time also for the Houses of Assembly all over Nigeria to stand up on behalf of the Nigerian child. It is one of those few moments that every well-meaning Nigerian should shout and reject the tyranny of these minority enemies of our progress.  If we fail to achieve this, we may as well bid farewell to any future at all, let alone that of a prosperous one.

what is the way out of this form of child abuse, underage marriage?...Stella get mads about it

Kidnapped Briton rescued in Lagos

POLICEMEN attached to the Lagos State Police Command have rescued the Briton who was kidnapped last week Tuesday few minutes after he landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.
It was gathered that a combined team of operatives from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, (SARS), and their counterpart from the Special Intelligence Bureau, (SIB) stormed an uncompleted two storey building at Okota, Isolo area of Lagos State, rescuing the British national and arresting a suspect.
The kidnappers, police sources said, demanded a ransom of one million dollars before the Briton could be released, but the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Umar Manko, ordered a clampdown on the kidnap gang.

Child marriage: Bisi Fayemi calls for sustained protest against Senate’s decision Arewa youths caution Senate

by  Sam Nwaoko-Ado Ekiti And Hassan Ibrahim -Kaduna

Wife of the Ekiti State governor, Chief (Mrs) Bisi Fayemi, has called for sustained protests against the decision of the Senate on girl-child marriage, saying the people must lend their voices to the ongoing outrage on the decision.
Mrs Fayemi, in a statement made available to newsmen in Ado Ekiti on Sunday, charged “more men and women of good conscience, civil society organisations, feminists and social justice crusaders to lend their voices to the ongoing outrage about the move by the Senate to legalise child marriage.”
In the statement by her Special Assistant on Media, Mr Akin Oyedele, Mrs Fayemi said “the lawmakers’ move is self-serving and at variance with all international conventions and protocols on the rights of the child, which Nigeria has ratified.”
She further said: “I’m not only disappointed by the decision of the Senate, as a mother, I’m ashamed, I’m unhappy and I’m pained that our senators, who also have female children, will vote for child marriage. This is the time in the country’s history when men and women of good conscience, civil society organisations, feminists and social justice crusaders should stand up to be counted among those vehemently protesting against the decision.”
Mrs Fayemi advised that “instead of this self-serving amendment to Section 29 B of the constitution, our lawmakers should devote more time to legislate on laws that protect the child against violence, exploitation and labour, harmful traditional practices, abuse and denial of education.”
The governor’s wife observed that “besides the social implication of hounding girl-child into early marriage, including denial of childhood and teenage development,” she noted that “there are inherent health hazards in child marriage.”
According to her, “the National Demographic Health Survey said at least 12,000 women are known to develop Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) every year in Nigeria, a good number of whom are said to be teenage girls of poor social economic background.”
Meanwhile, the Arewa Youths Forum (AYF) has cautioned the Nigerian Senate over the controversy surrounding child marriage, saying it should concentrate on making laws for the good of Nigerians, not debating on issues laced with religion and ethnicity that could further divide the people.
AYF, in a statement signed by its National President, Gambo Ibrahim Gujungu, at the weekend, said it had become expedient to make its position known in view of the fact that the issue had heated up the polity and created divisions along political, ethnic and religious lines.
The group said the senators’ approach showed that they were poorly equipped for legislative functions and grossly insensitive to the critical challenges Nigerians were facing as a people.
In a related development, a notable Nollywood actress, Mrs Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, has criticised the approval of child marriage by the Senate.
Jalade-Ekeinde expressed her feeling on the issue while speaking as a special guest at the MBGN beauty pageant on Saturday night in Yenagoa.
According to her, approving early marriage of the girl-child will expose her to various abuses and exploitation.
“The number of the Nigerian children on our streets today is alarming and this is due to the abuses and exploitation they suffer in their homes,” she said.
The actress, who was honoured with ‘SilverBird Unique Personality of the Year’ award, called on the government to rather empower the girl-child through sound and compulsory education programmes.

TV Foresees Its Future. Netflix Is There.

But Netflix already has.
Netflix knows a little about transformation. It’s worth remembering that it managed to go from the largest user of the Postal Service to the largest source of download traffic on the Web in the span of months, not years. After a big stumble on pricing in 2011, Netflix recovered and then some, using its expertise in technology and algorithms to accrue over 36 million users worldwide, a number that will probably grow when it announces its earnings on Monday. Its stock has already risen more than 200 percent in the last year.
But few would have guessed that Netflix’s software expertise would extend to entertainment produced by top-flight actors, directors and writers. Beginning this year, Netflix streamed four original series — “House of Cards,” “Hemlock Grove,” “Arrested Development” and “Orange Is the New Black.” The shows earned generally good notices, kicked up a great deal of chatter, and, drum roll here, were nominated for 14 Emmys. It was the first time an Internet-only service earned a seat at the big-boy table in television.
The Emmys were the most prominent marker of change, but hardly the only one, in a week full of headlines about what TV is becoming. It’s not their first foray, but if Apple and Google move further into the television space, they are sure to collide with not only traditional players, but Netflix, Amazon, Sony and Intel. And Aereo, which so far is a small but persistent player backed by Barry Diller, won another court victory for its plan to totally upend broadcast networks, by streaming their content without compensating them.
Meanwhile, what were the traditional television players up to? Squabbling yet again over retransmission fees, with a standoff between CBS and Time Warner Cable that could set off a blackout, driving audiences to other ways of viewing. The only constant was steady price hikes on cable bills.
The future of television — a place where cable is not the only answer for average viewers — just drew a little closer.
Netflix has earned its place in that future. It won some victories on the programming side by financing creators and staying out of their hair, an approach invented and perfected by HBO. Given that HBO pulled in 108 Emmy nominations last week, Netflix has a long way to go. But David Bianculli, a professor at Rowan University in New Jersey who blogs at TV Worth Watching, suggests another view.
“It took HBO 25 years to get its first Emmy nomination; it took Netflix six months,” he said. In that sense, Netflix is more like Pixar than Hulu, showing that a Silicon Valley company could produce creative, successful programming.
Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, told The New York Times last week that the Emmy nominations solidified the idea that “television is television, no matter what pipe brings it to the screen.”
He’s right. Television used to come over the air or through the coaxial cable. Now it seems to come from everywhere on all kinds of devices.
Both Google and Apple continue to hover around the honey pot of television. Apple’s rumored effort at making a TV set has been like Godot — much anticipated, never arriving — but in the meantime it is in talks with distributors like Time Warner Cable and programmers like Walt Disney to explore collaboration on apps.
Google has been in talks with program providers, including cable channels, about distribution over the Internet, a more complicated approach — the cable systems that distribute programming would be left out of the mix — with a higher risk in execution.
In both instances, the companies are taking the same wine and putting it in a new bottle, creating a new interface to replace clunky remotes while hoping to gain a lot of valuable data in the process. Figuring out how to put a new skin on the same database can be lucrative — Weather.com, a huge business, is built on existing government data — but it’s one thing to present better navigation, and another to produce better television.
Apple reinvented the music industry on its terms and in doing so cut the legacy music business in half. The TV business, which is still sitting on healthy earnings, if not ratings, saw that movie already and wants no part of it.
But Apple is nothing if not relentless. One of its reported approaches is to enable ad-skipping while making a payment to ad-supported networks. “In essence they were saying that they would cut them a check while destroying their business model,” said Craig Moffett, a telecommunications analyst. “How long do you think that conversation lasted?”
Meanwhile Google is selling its ability to make content more visible and searchable; that sounds like the favor Google did for the newspaper business, which, like music, is half the size it once was.

Strong earthquake in western China kills 11 people

BEIJING: A strong earthquake struck a moderately populated part of western China on Monday morning, killing at least 11 people and injuring 81, according to the local government.
The quake hit near the city of Dingxi in Gansu province, a region of mountains, desert and pastureland with a population of 26 million. That makes it one of China’s more lightly populated provinces, although the Dingxi area has a greater concentration of farms and towns with a total population of about 2.7 million.
The deaths and injuries were reported in Min County and other rural southern parts of Dingxi municipality, the provincial government said in a statement posted on its official microblog.
Residents described shaking windows and swinging lights but little major damage and little panic. Shaking was felt in the provincial capital of Lanzhou 177 kilometers (110 miles) north, and as far away as Xi’an, 400 kilometers (250 miles) to the east.
“You could see the chandeliers wobble and the windows vibrating and making noise, but there aren’t any cracks in the walls. Shop assistants all poured out onto the streets when the shaking began,” said a front desk clerk at the Wuyang Hotel in the Zhang County seat about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the epicenter. The clerk surnamed Bao refrained from identifying herself further, as is common among ordinary Chinese.
The government’s earthquake monitoring center said the initial quake at 7:45 a.m. (2345 GMT Sunday) was magnitude-6.6 and subsequent tremors included a magnitude-5.6.
The quake was shallow, which can be more destructive. The center said it struck about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) beneath the surface, while the Gansu provincial earthquake administration said it was just 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) deep.
The US Geological Survey measured the magnitude of the initial quake as 5.9 and the depth at 10 kilometers (6 miles).
Initial measurements of an earthquake can vary widely, especially if different monitoring equipment is used.
Dingxi is about 1,233 kilometers (766 miles) west of Beijing.
China’s worst earthquake in recent years was a 7.9-magnitude temblor that struck the southwestern province of Sichuan in 2008, leaving 90,000 people dead or missing.
