Mourinho lauds Torres: He's in fantastic shape

The Chelsea boss believes the Spain international is in a "very good moment" and praised the 29-year-old's recent form despite his red card in Saturday's draw with Tottenham

Jose Mourinho has praised Chelsea striker Fernando Torres, insisting the Spaniard is in "fantastic shape" at the start of the 2013-14 campaign.

Torres has shouldered plenty of criticism ever since his big-money move to Stamford Bridge from Liverpool in January 2011 and his position in Mourinho's side looked to be in doubt following the signing of Samuel Eto'o in the summer.

The 29-year-old has, however, started the Blues' last two games and although he was sent off after clashing with Jan Vertonghen against Tottenham on Saturday, Mourinho is pleased with how his striker has started the season.

"Fernando is very strong," Mourinho said. "Physically, I think he’s living a very good moment. I was watching Fernando’s matches for Chelsea in other seasons and it looked to me, a bit heavy, a little slow. Fernando now looks in fantastic shape.

"He played a very good game. He knows what I think, I don’t have to tell him. He knows I’m very happy with his performances. He knows already."

Frank Lampard, meanwhile, offered his backing to the former Atletico Madrid front man and is adamant that goals will arrive for him and Chelsea's other attacking options.

"Goals will come for the strikers," he said. "They might go and score 20 goals between them in the next 10 games. The way Fernando played, with his presence, he will score goals and create goals for others."
