how old were you when these things were going on?

Do you remember any of these?
These museum pieces date from the time people actually watched Doordarshan. Some of these (Gold Spot!), we'd love to see return.

1. Fido Dido

Spiky haired and lanky-limbed, Fido Dido was cool. Even if your pocket money didn't extend to buying and drinking 7-Up, you probably doodled Fido in the margin of your schoolwork.

It was a truth universally accepted that just when you were most engrossed in Chitrahaar/Mahabharata/Hum Log/insert-favourite-show, programming would be rudely replaced with colour bars and a terse note of apology. You were certain that Doordarshan was not really sorry for the interruption but there wasn't much you could do but rage impotently about missing what Krishna or Nanhe were currently upto.

DDMessage650.jpg3. Gold SpotThe zing thing. Need we say more?

4. Phantom candy cigarettes
This is what you 'smoked' waiting for the school bus/at recess/playing badminton in the park/hanging out at the street corner. And how cool you thought you looked.

Phantom650.jpg5. Charminar
This is what you smoked when you graduated to real cigarettes but couldn't afford to buy India Kings. If you believed the advert, all Charminar smokers needed was a bike, a pretty pillion rider and a highway and life was pretty perfect. Women smokers - they apparently didn't exist.

CharminarEmbed.jpg6. Target magazine
Once a month, you rushed home from the local news stand with a copy of Target and spent the rest of the day reading the exploits of Gardhab Das, Detective Moochwala, Tegrat and other dignitaries.

Target650.jpg7. Ek Anek Aur Ekta
You never tired of watching the Ek Chidiya video, an animated short film teaching unity in diversity, over and over again.

8. Mile Sur Mera Tumhara
This patriotic music video starring the who's who of India's arts and culture luminaries became your anthem.

9. Shah Rukh Khan in Fauji
Abhimanyu Rai, naam to suna hoga. Rahul who? SRK had us at hello as a young, dashing soldier.

10. Aishwarya Rai in the Pepsi advertisement
"Hi, I'm Sanjana. Got a another Pepsi?" Remember? There's an entire generation of Indian men who can never ever forget. Yehi hai right choice baby. Aha.

11. Chelpark ink
You filled your fountain pen with Chelpark blue-black ink. If you had the cheaper sort of pen, you used an ink dropper.

Chelpark650.jpg12. Video cassettes
Your weekend entertainment looked like this.

VHS650.jpg13. Song books
You bought slim books containing song lyrics and sang loudly along to Madonna's La Isla Bonita. You never would have deciphered the Spanish without them

Songbooks650.jpg14. Pepsi Beat cassettes
Remember these? The good people at Lehar Pepsi kindly brought us songs the rest of the world was listening to - there was Pump Up The Volume, Road To Hell and, of course, lots of Madonna and Michael Jackson.

PepsiBeat650.jpg15. Bakelite telephones
Dial N for nostalgia.
