How Davido Dealt With Kenyan Groupies Who Wanted To Have Sex With Him

by

"Ema dami duro, emi omo baba olowo..." those are the words to the chorus of Davido's breakout single, "Dami Duro."
In the Yoruba language, that phrase translates to, "don't try and stop me, I'm the son of a rich man!" And that is true. Davido minces no words when he brags about being the son of a billionaire Nigerian politician, and there were hoards of Kenyan groupies who wanted a piece of that money, by hook or by crook.
We were told the story of how Davido was hounded by these thirsty Kenyan women by a member of his entourage during his stay in Kenya. The drama all began at his press conference at a prestigious Nairobi hotel. According to Davido's entourage, Kenyan socialite Pendo was following them all over the hotel, but Davido didn't have time for trysts. He was attending to the press. Pendo allegedly stayed at the rooftop of the hotel for several hours, waiting for the opportune moment to get with Davido, but the time never came.

Fast forward to the Boombaataa event itself. Very many of Davido's groupies, including Pendo, found their way into the VIP and VVIP tents using press badges that they somehow got their hands on. They thought they would get to talk to Davido one on one in the VIP, but woe unto them! Davido was nowhere to be seen but the stage! Another groupie, tall, lanky lass with green shorts, made her way onto the stage when there was a twerking contest. Catch a glimpse of her here:

It has been reported to us that after the concert was over, Pendo and the lanky lass tried to force their way into the car that was transporting Davido, only to be unceremoniously kicked out by his security! Off to Skylux Davido went, for the afterparty, and more drama ensued...
At Skylux, Davido quietly checked in and made his way to the VIP section of the club. He was there with his crew, mingling with entertainment industry bigshots after getting his dues for the performance, when the DJ that night made the blunder that killed it: he announced via loudspeaker that Davido was in the house!
This was like a mating call for all the thirsty groupies that were in the area. Before they knew it, a previously empty Skyluxx VIP lounge was full of Nairobi women from all walks of life who forced their way in. Guess who had also made her way into the Skyluxx VIP? Pendo. Her attempts to get through to Davido were futile, as were those of the other Nairobi divas. Davido wanted to talk business that night, and was only hanging with the shot callers.

Back to the hotel Davido went, after the Skyluxx debacle. By this time, most of the groupies had given up their pursuit, but Pendo and the lanky lass from the concert were the most determined. They went round the hotel asking where Davido's room was, and while the lanky lass didn't find it, Pendo managed to get through. What happened in the room is anyone's guess, but the real drama was saved for the morning, where Pendo had allegedly racked up quite the bill, buying wine and food, expecting Davido to pay for all of it. But alas! The son of a rich politician was not willing to pay! He left Pendo with exactly zero bob, causing a huge fracas between her and the hotel manager! She allegedly walked out of the hotel, tail between her legs, and came to Ghafla's office to report her side of the story.

UPDATE 2-Shell to sell at least 4 more Nigeria oil blocks -sources

* Oil majors scaling back onshore, shallow water Nigeria
* Two blocks lie in region hit by oil theft, spills
* Nigerian firms, partnered with foreign, expected to bid
Joe Brock reports that;
will sell at least four more oil blocks in Nigeria in its latest divestment from Africa's top oil exporter, three oil industry sources familiar with the deals said on Wednesday. The blocks are Oil Mining Licenses (OMLs) 13 and 16 onshore the Niger Delta, and OML 71 and 72, which are in shallow water, the sources told Reuters.

Shell said in June that it was considering further sale of assets in the eastern Niger Delta, where it has security problems - although it has never publicly connected the two.
The oil major said then that it was still committed to Nigeria long term. It has already sold eight Niger Delta licences for a total $1.8 billion since 2010.

Cape Town - The woman who was allegedly kidnapped and raped by former gang boss Rashied Staggie is fighting for her life in hospital after she was shot.
Gunmen pumped several bullets into the Manenberg woman’s body and killed a male friend who was with her in the early hours of on Tuesday morning.
The 30-year-old mom of six, who cannot be identified because she is the victim of a sex crime, is on life support at GF Jooste Hospital.
She was shot in her head, neck, face, back and hands by suspected gangsters.
Staggie is set to be released on day parole from September 24, after being convicted of the then woman’s kidnapping and rape.
Meanwhile, her friend Romano Oliver, 27, died at the bloody scene shortly after midnight.
The two were walking home when they were confronted by their attackers who first asked for a cigarette before opening fire on them.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said Romano was shot in the head.
“Police were busy with crime prevention duties in Red River Road when they heard gunshots,” he told the Daily Voice.
“On investigation police discovered the body of a 27-year-old male.
“He was shot once through the head and a 30-year-old female was wounded and taken to hospital.”
Cops are still searching for the suspects who will face charges of murder and attempted murder.
In 2003, Staggie and co-accused Randall Bosch were found guilty of kidnapping and raping the victim who was then in her teens.
At the time, the young mom testified that Staggie took her to an isolated area and forced her at gunpoint to have sex with three men.
Staggie, who pleaded not guilty, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the attack.
On Tuesday, the victim’s mother, 55, revealed she always feared for her daughter’s life – even 12 years after the attack.
The mom said: “It affected our family in a really bad way. I always worried about her and when we heard Staggie was coming out, we became even more fearful.”
The mom said that her daughter had identified her shooters.
“A neighbour came to call us at home to say they were both shot and lying on a field in Red River Road,” she added.
She said her daughter crawled from the field to a nearby house where she collapsed.
“When I arrived there, she could still talk and she could tell me who it was,” the mother said.
“I held her hand when she asked me to and I prayed with my child. She kept apologising to me.”
The concerned mother said her daughter insisted on going out to a friend earlier after they had an argument.
“I told her not to go because she was going into the Hard Livings territory,” she said.
“But when she insisted on going, I told her to be back in 30 minutes.
“As I watched her walk down the road, I could see the Hard Livings running across the road.”
About 40 minutes after the victim left her home, they were shot.
“I should have fetched her when I said I would,” the devastated mom said.
“If I knew this was going to happen, I wouldn’t have let her go because I had a feeling something would go wrong.”
There was a strong police presence in Renoster Road, a short distance from the home where the victim lives with her young children.
Cop sources said that Manenberg has exploded in violence in the last month as rival gangs wage war in the area.

Dubai - An international rights group condemned the sentencing of a Saudi Arabian website founder to be whipped 600 times and jailed for seven years for violating Islamic values, saying it undermined the kingdom's stated support for religious debate.
A court in Jeddah handed down the sentence on Raif Badawi, who started the 'Free Social Liberals' website to discuss the role of religion in Saudi Arabia, Saudi media reported on Tuesday.
“This incredibly harsh sentence for a peaceful blogger makes a mockery of Saudi Arabia's claims that it supports reform and religious dialogue,” said Nadim Houry, deputy Middle East director at US-based Human Rights Watch.
The United States said it was deeply concerned about the case. “We believe that when public speech is deemed offensive, be it via social media or any other means, the issue is best addressed through open dialogue and honest debate,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told a briefing on Tuesday.

Ofcom Completes 800MHz Clearance Ahead of Schedule

Ofcom, 4G, LTE
UK regulator has announced that a four-year process to release 800MHz spectrum for 4G mobile broadband has been completed. This spectrum was previously used for broadcasting digital TV channels and by wireless audio devices.
Last year, Ofcom secured an accelerated timetable for releasing these frequencies following discussions with TV broadcasters, Digital UK and the transmission company Arqiva. Wednesday’s completion comes five months earlier than originally planned.
The 800 MHz spectrum was auctioned by Ofcom for use by 4G companies in February. Everything Everywhere, has already launched 4G services using a different frequency band – 1800 MHz.
according to in News,The company also won rights to use 800 MHz spectrum in Ofcom’s 4G auction, as did Vodafone, Three and Telefónica UK (O2). Ofcom placed an obligation on one of the 800 MHz spectrum licences, won by Telefónica UK (O2), to cover 98% of the UK indoors by 2017.

Sad day for education, as court ruling set aside a decision to close 17 schools says MEC

Cape Town - A court ruling to set aside a decision to close 17 schools marked “a sad day for education”, Western Cape Education MEC Donald Grant has said.
On Wednesday Western Cape High Court Judges Andre le Grange and Nape Dolamo set aside Grant's decision, made in October to go into effect from December 31. He and his department were ordered to pay the legal costs of the schools and their governing bodies.
The SA Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu), which was listed as an applicant, was ordered to pay its own costs.
The judges ruled that the reasons given for the closures were brief and that the public consultation process that followed was inadequate.
Le Grange found that the reasons Grant presented for possible closures were largely inadequate and irrational.
“The applicants have demonstrated in the papers filed that the schools the MEC decided to close have remarkable similarities to those he decided to keep open,” he said in the judgment.
“The difference between the MEC's initial and final reasons for closure at certain schools... in my view gives further credence to the applicants' complaint of irrationality.”
The court found the public consultation process an “artificial formality” that fell short of what was reasonably expected.....
it was gathered that Grant announced last year that 27 schools faced possible closure for various reasons. After representations were made at public hearings, he decided to close 18 schools and transfer pupils to “receiving schools”.

Ways To Slow Down Aging And Look Young All The Time

Drinking Water
The process of aging is natural and it isn’t something you can stop from happening. As you age, your skin starts to lose its moistness and become more prone to damage. However, there are many natural ways available to slow down the aging process and look young. Here’s 5:
Drink Plenty of Water
Human body is made up of 60% water and day-to-day routines deplete this valuable resource which needs to be replenished. Drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water every day – more is obviously better. Having adequate water content in the body will keep your internal organs hydrated as well as in good working condition. Additionally, it can help your digestive system run smoothly and stop bowel irregularity. Last but not least, it’ll help your actual skin look flexible, vibrant and supple by keeping it hydrated and flushing out wastes from the body.
Reduce Stress
Every person has stress in their life, and if you learn to manage it, then you’ll find your life is a way better. Researches reveal that mental stress speeds up the aging process. When you’re stressed out, you lose the body’s natural balance which in turn causes damage to bodily hormone secretion, cell-repair, and collagen generation. There are many ways for you to reduce the mental stress. You can divert your attention to various things like doing exercises, in order to relieve stress. Yoga, deep breathing and meditation can cut down stress, boost oxygen and blood flow and improve energy level.

You may think that severe calorie reduction may lead to better and quick results. It is important to understand that the human body is complex. As a result, starving yourself may disrupt your body’s metabolism. This will only slow down results. It is important not to starve yourself, but eat wholesome meals after short intervals of time. In other words, you should stick with wholesome carbs rather than giving up all carbohydrates.

The Korean Zombie: the most exciting fighter to ever grace the octagon.

Tom Szczerbowski-USA TODAY Sports that Chan-Sung Jung, The Korean Zombie, might well be the most exciting fighter to ever grace the octagon. Between the flamboyant jumping knees, twisters and rice bail turnovers, Jung is also strikingly well-rounded and, of course, appeals to an enormously under represented demographic by being an Asian fighter who has reached the upper echelons of the UFC.
In MMA circles, there is the occasional delusional fan who argues that Asia just hasn't had any good fighters, and similarly extreme claims come from the JMMA elitists about a whole group of fighters that the UFC won't sign but who would mop up. The truth, as it often does, stands somewhere in the middle and is nowhere near as exciting. There have been many great fighters out of Asia, but for various reasons, they have not been picked up by the UFC after the fall of PRIDE or just haven't cut it.

Jung's infamous twister.

The two most prominent examples are Kid Yamamoto and Takanori Gomi, two absolutely elite fighters whose records show ample wins over quality competition but who were already on pretty unimpressive streaks when Asian promotions stopped outbidding the UFC for them. Now they are winding down their careers, losing to whoever needs a big name on their record.said Jack slack....

Celebrity Wedding Trends for 2013-14
For celebrity brides, the sky is the limit when they’re planning a wedding. Here are some of the top trends for the famous celebrity weddings coming in 2013 and 2014 by HansonEllis.com.
(Newswire.net -- July 30, 2013) Torrance, CA -- Celebrity brides set the trends that are showcased in weddings in the coming years. “We want to look like them, dress like them and buy what they are buying,” says Tracy Hoang of HansonEllis.com, “Who doesn’t want to look and feel like a star?” It is attributed to this, that a year after Kate Middleton wed, sleeved bridal gowns are an ever growing hot item, after years of strapless dresses dominating popularity. Starlets aren’t afraid to make a statement, be bold or untraditional.
Popular in particular for celebrity brides are meaningful and memorable favors. No one hears about a Hollywood bride sending her guests home with butter mints. Their gifts offer a piece of their personality, and become memorable. That’s why five years after her marriage to Shaun So, people are still talking about the chopsticks Anna Chlumsky gave her guests.
Another big trend for celebrities, perhaps inspired by the popularity of Dancing with the Stars, is a choreographed dance for their first dance as a married couple. Bringing back classic dance through taking lessons before the wedding, not only helps the pair stay in shape for the big day, but also provides a fun show for their guests. They’re used to having the eyes on them, so this is a fun trend for which they participate.
Celebrities are used to seeing their names in the lights, and having the spotlight on them. It should come as no surprise that this translates to their wedding day, where having unique lighting fixtures are a growing trend in Hollywood. Elaborate chandeliers hanging over each table offer great lighting and beautifully accent the centerpieces. Unusual globes accent cozy nooks offering the feel of a lounge.
Surprising trends from celebrities aren’t surprising anymore because the unexpected is expected for those in the limelight. Their trends become the trends that regular people follow, and showcase that it is good to personalize a wedding to the couple. Now if only their marriages would last as long as the trends they set…

I Never Had a Girl Friend – CU’s Best Graduating Student

Michael-Eromhonsele

According to OMG Reporter  Michael-Eromhonsele In a special report by PunchNG, Michael Eromhonsele sacrificed romance for excellence and emerged the best graduating student of Covenant University in Ota, Ogun State at 20. Twenty-year-old Eromhonsele Michael was the cynosure of all eyes at the eighth graduation ceremony of the Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, on Friday. He was the best graduating student of the institution. To achieve this feat, he obtained a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.92, out of a possible 5.0, to beat 1,465 other undergraduates. He says his first few days in the university campus were uneventful. According to him, he was a bit confused because he was not used to the prayer regime that he had to be part of at the faith-based institution. Spirituality is one of the core values of CU. But as soon as he found his rhythm, there was no looking back for him. He says he did not allow himself to be distracted by his friends or the opposite sex as he concentrated on his studies. Listing some of the factors that helped him to achieve that feat, he says, “First, I must acknowledge God’s favour and his assistance. Second, I did not entertain any form of distractions. I did not attend parties, and I did not have any girlfriend or what you may refer to as a lover. I concentrated on my studies.” What about his study style? Eromhonsele reveals that apart from the serene environment in the school, which is conducive for learning, he loves to read late into the night. According to him, he started reading from 10.00pm and he won’t stop until 1.00am. “Those are the hours I found most convenient to read. As soon as I closed my book, I went to bed. I woke up at 7.00am, and got ready for my classes. Lectures start at 8.00am,” he adds. Apart from being the best overall student, he was also the best in the College of Science and Technology where he studied Civil Engineering. Eromhonsele, who is his parents’ second child, explains that they contributed in no small measure to whatever success he recorded in the university. He stresses that they constantly reminded him of his background and they advised him not to lose focus. Eromhonsele had his primary school at the University of Benin Staff School, while he attended both University of Benin Demonstration Secondary School and Greater Tomorrow Secondary School for his junior and senior secondary school education. “My parents were very supportive. They always reminded me of the home I’m from, and they also urged me to take my studies seriously,” he notes. He explains that his mother, Charity Eromhonsele, is a business woman, while the father, Gabriel Eromhonsele, a civil engineer runs a consulting firm in Benin, Edo State. He says his father is a native of Igueben. Apart from his parents, Eromhonsele did not lose sight of the contributions of his lecturers, who, he says, impacted him throughout his stay in the institution. Their pieces of advice, he adds, went a long way in shaping his outlook on life. Talking about the lesson he’s taking away from the CU, Eromhonsele says he’s learnt that “the people one surrounds himself with in life will determine how far one will go.” Again, he advises that there is no future without God, and that he has learnt to put Him first in everything he does. After obtaining a first degree, what next for Michael? Beaming with smiles, he says, “I have already got admission to University of Surrey in the United kingdom to read Structural Engineering for my Master’s degree. I chose this particular course because I feel the need to improve on the structural aspects of construction works.” Eromhonsele is already missing his teachers and friends as he confesses, “Definitely, I miss my friends and the lecturers, most especially my course supervisors. But I am happy, it is for good.” The eighth convocation event was not all about Michael alone. A total of 1,466 students graduated during the event tagged Release of Eagles 2013. The breakdown showed that 114 made first class, 720 made second class upper, 565 obtained second class lower division, while 67 were in the third class category. The Chancellor of the CU, Bishop David Oyedepo, while delivering his address, identified leadership as the greatest challenge facing the 21st Century Africa. While he said that leadership was not an endowment but a commitment to the future, he noted that leadership “is an art that must be continuously and intelligibly developed.” Oyedepo, who spoke under the theme, ‘Living the Covenant Dream – Our Leadership Development Mandate,’ explained that the mandate of the university was a commitment to promoting the man-child model of education aimed at making men out of children, provoking accelerated maturity intellectually and emotionally.

Go Home Illegal Immigrants' campaign may spread UK-wide

Image from promogroup.co.uk
Image from promogroup.co.uk
The British government says that a controversial billboard scheme commanding illegal immigrants to go home or face arrest is “working,” adding that the campaign – termed ‘stupid and offensive’- could be extended nationwide.
A spokesperson for UK PM David Cameron stated on Monday that “this pilot that is currently running is about targeting [illegal immigrants] and it is working.”

Downing Street claims that employing vans carrying the billboards with ‘In the UK illegally? Go home or face arrest’ across them is more effective than seeking immigrants out, arresting them and subsequently removing them by force.

While claiming that the scheme has already made an impact, the Home Office would not give figures on immigrant numbers who had been responsive to the posters, saying that the week-long trial had only reached its conclusion of Sunday so it was impossible to release official statistics at this point. They added that they were “looking at what they can take forward.”

British Immigration Minister Mark Harper had described the new initiative as “an alternative to being led away in handcuffs” last week.

The signs have been used as part of the preliminary scheme alongside the distribution of leaflets, being driven around six London boroughs on two trucks over the course of a week.

The billboards also provide immigrants with a number to SMS if they require support, information or documentation. Overall, the campaign costs Britons around 10,000 pounds ($15,300).

Immediate debate sparked over "stupid and offensive" scheme

UK Business Secretary Vince Cable condemned the campaign on Sunday as “stupid and offensive” on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show, suggesting that its continuation was unlikely.

Don Flynn of Migrants Rights Network said on Monday that Cable’s comments were “further evidence that exploiting public anxiety is not the simple route to instant popularity,” while pointing out that the trucks toured areas “where Conservative election strategists think they are susceptible to losing votes to [UK Independence Party] UKIP.” He added that ironically, the Home Office was now tasked with fending off complaints against themselves through British watchdog, the Advertising Standards Authority.

Even Conservative London Mayor Boris John son conceded “I suppose it could have been more gently drafted” in a Sunday Telegraph column, despite defending the scheme overall, saying “Illegal immigrants have every opportunity to make their case to remain in Britain.”

A drawn-out backlash against the scheme took place over the weekend, with clergy and councils alike denouncing it.

“We were neither informed nor consulted about this Home Office initiative. We have no information from the Home Office about why they have chosen Redbridge to carry out such an unusual scheme,” said Councilor Keith Prince of the London Borough of Redbridge in a statement.

“This mobile billboard campaign is a very inappropriate way to discourage illegal immigrants from staying in the UK, not least because the message that is often received is that all immigrants and foreigners are unwelcome in the UK,” Bishop Patrick Lynch, the bishop for migration for the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, said on Friday.

In conjunction with the billboards, numbers of reforms are set to be introduced to combat illegal immigration in the UK. They will include a $4,600 bond which selected visitors from certain countries will be required to pay upon applying for a British visa. The bond will be returned to visitors from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nigeria and Ghana when they leave the country.

The new measures are set to come into play in November.

US approves drones for civilian use

AFP Photo / Don Emmert
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued certificates for two types of unmanned aircraft for civilian use. The move is expected to lead to the first approved commercial drone operation later this summer.
The two unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) are the Scan Eagle X200 and Aero Vironment’s PUMA. They both measure around 4 ½ feet long, weighing less than 55 pounds, and have a wing span of ten and nine feet respectively.
Both the Scan Eagle and the PUMA received “restricted category type certificates”which permit aerial surveillance. Prior to the FAA’s decision, the only way the private sector could operate UAS in US airspace was by obtaining an experimental airworthiness certificate which specifically restricts commercial operations.
The PUMA is expected to support emergency response crews for wildlife surveillance and oil spill monitoring over the Beaufort Sea to the north of Canada and Alaska. The Scan Eagle will be used by a major energy company off the Alaskan Coast to survey ice floes and migrating whales in Arctic oil exploration areas.
The issuing of the certificates is seen as an important step to integrating UAS into US airspace. Both drone operations will meet the requirements of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012, which includes a mandate to increase Arctic UAS commercial operations.
Most non-military use of drones in the US has so far been limited to the police and other government agencies. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in March that drones will soon be used by the NYPD and will become as ubiquitous as security cameras.
Documents released by the American civil Liberties Union (ACLU) via the Freedom of Information Act have revealed that the US Marshals Service has also experimented with the use of drones for domestic surveillance.
Military drones are used extensively by the US Air Force for targeting terrorist suspects in several countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Yemen.
The strikes have been highly controversial, as they are ordered without the knowledge or participation of the countries concerned, and are sometimes inaccurate and kill civilians.
Pakistan’s relations with the US have been soured because of drone strikes. Just last month, the new government in Islamabad summoned a top US envoy who was given a letter of protest against drone strikes by the US military.
In May, a Pakistani court ruled that US drone strikes in its tribal regions should be considered war crimes, and that the government should use force to protect its civilians.

A massive nationwide law enforcement sweep targeting child sex-trafficking resulted in the saving of 105 sexually exploited children and the arrest of more than 150 pimps and others, the FBI said Monday.
The coordinated action between multiple federal, state and local agencies was the largest such enforcement action to date, according to the FBI. Seventy-six cities took part, as well as the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) as part of the Bureau's Innocence Lost National Initiative.
The raid was the seventh similar such action to date under the title "Operation Cross Country." (At left, watch video the FBI posted of the operation.)
"Child prostitution remains a persistent threat to children across America," said Ron Hosko, assistant director of the FBI's Criminal Investigative Division, in a press release. "This operation serves as a reminder that these abhorrent crimes can happen anywhere and that the FBI remains committed to stopping this cycle of victimization and holding the criminals who profit from this exploitation accountable."
The FBI says that most children who are vulnerable to such exploitation have a "void in their lives," be it from family, poverty, and other circumstances. Too often, pimps and other abusive figures step in to fill it, leaving the victims thinking they have no other choice.
Since its creation in 2003, the Innocence Lost National Initiative has resulted in the identification and recovery of 2,700 children who have been sexually exploited--and substantial sentences of convicted pimps, including eight federal life sentences and terms of imprisonment frequently ranging from 15-50 years, according to the FBI.

California prison offering inmates $150 nightly 'Pay to Stay' rates

Some prisoner’s in Northern California are upgrading to better living spaces – but only if they’ve got the cash to pay.
That’s because a jail in Fremont is offering prisoners the chance to pay-as-they-go for a cell in the prison . And the rent isn’t cheap, running $155 a night, the same as a local three star hotel, according to local affiliate WTKR.
“You do get cable TV, but you don’t get a warm cookie on your bed,” Lt. Mark Devine, of the Fremont Police Department told the station.
The $10 million minimum security prison is far from luxurious with standard prison beds, shared bathroom and shower space. But it does come with various recreational options, including a HD widescreen TV.
Built in 2000, the prison facility has 54 beds and can house up to 96 inmates at a time.
And the space is only eligible to misdemeanor offenders who receive prior approval from a judge.
While the program is unusual, the Fremont Police Department said that similar “Pay to Stay” programs currently exist in Southern California cities such as Anaheim and Beverly Hills .
So, why would a prisoner pay so much money to essentially live in the same conditions they’d find in one of the other state prisons? It turns out, they’re not paying for added value, but rather what’s not there.
“The only other thing you’re really paying for is the smallness and the quietness of the facility,” Devine told WTKR.
California Governor Jerry Brown was recently tasked with finding ways to reduce the burden of the state’s overcrowded prison system.
And it could provide an economic boost for the local economy. Devine told the Sacramento Bee that if at least 16 inmates stay at the facility for two nights a week, the city would make an annual profit of about $244,000.
Devine says the prison was originally intended to be used for misdemeanor offenders to perform work while they served out their time. But the prison had remained unused until it was opened for the pay-as-you-go system.
“We are the trustees of a large facility that was paid for with taxpayer money. Now we need to be good stewards of that investment and maximize its use and efficiency for the taxpayers,” Devine said. “There is a cost to government. And that cost, where appropriate, should be borne by the people using the program or facility, or what not.”
However, the pay-as-you-go plan has drawn criticism from the American Civil Liberties Union, who said it creates a bad precedent by giving more preferential treatment to wealthier inmates.
"There should not be one form of punishment for those who can afford to pay and a different form of punishment for those who can't," ACLU National Prison Project attorney Carl Takei told the Bee.

Happiness peaks at ages 23 and 69

We enjoy life the most during our young adult lives and again when we are on the cusp of becoming septuagenarians.

However, the long years in between appear to present many emotional peaks and valleys. That’s according to a new study, which finds that the two happiest years of a person’s life are 23 and 69.
The results of the study are being published this week by the Center for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics.
“One theory is that the U-shape is driven by unmet aspirations which are painfully felt in midlife but beneficially abandoned later in life,” Princeton researcher Hannes Schwandt, who led the London School of Economics study, told the Daily Mail.
Other recent studies have attempted to track happiness to economic security. For example, a 2010 Princeton study found that personal wealth does affect one’s respective happiness but only up to about $75,000. Beyond that, other studies have found that personal relationships and physical health are more intricately tied to happiness.
Another article published today looks at the “10 Habits of Happiness,” which include gratitude lists, getting enough sleep and spending time outdoors.
For the study, Schwandt and his team compared happiness levels for 23,161 Germans between the ages of 17 and 85.
Schwandt said individuals enter a lowered state of happiness at around age 55, when they begin to negatively analyze the various unrealized accomplishments in their lives. However, at around age 60, the happiness level begins a steady uptick as those same people move beyond their past regrets and enter a level of acceptance.
“People in their fifties could learn from the elderly, who generally feel less regret,” he said. “They should try not to be frustrated by their unmet expectations because they are probably not feeling much worse than their peers.”
However, the study found that happiness again begins to decline as individuals move into their 70s.
And if you want to take part in your own happiness survey, there’s a new app that lets users track their personal happiness and upload data that will be analyzed as part of a larger happiness study by the Harvard University Committee for the Use of Human Subjects.

'The Great Firewall of Porn': This program blocks you from visiting any website that isn't pornography

Generally, a company or a school will set up a firewall to stop its computer users from visiting pornographic websites. But what if you developed a program that blocked any website that didn't have pornography on it, and only allowed users to surf to sites showing a little (or a lot) of T & A?

That is the idea behind The Great Firewall of Porn, a brilliant bit of software from British hacker Sicksad first spotted by website Hack A Day. The Great Firewall of Porn was constructed by Sicksad to prevent visitors from accessing any non-porn websites, turning the usual idea of the proper firewall on its head.

It is also a canny protest against the UK government and Prime Minister David Cameron, who has proposed a new law that would require British Internet users to "opt in" to being allowed to view pornography on the web when choosing an Internet Service Provider. Unless they tick a box when signing up for Internet service, in other words, British computer users will not be able to view porn on their home networks.

Critics of the law contend that such a filter constitutes undue government censorship and repression of free speech. Based on a video posted by Sicksad introducing his version of a UK Porn Filter, it would seem that the hacker agrees.

At 55, Sharon Stone says she has a greater sense of confidence — a fresh take on her life.
“It’s not like 50 is the new 30. It’s like fifty is the new chapter,” she told New You magazine. “We know so much at this age, and people realize we’re the ones with experience. We’re a very colorful generation that is leading once again.”
Stone, who was divorced from editor Phil Bronstein in 2004, is also celebrating the changes she’s seen in her appearance.

“I thought I lost the deep vortex on my eyelid that you have when you’re younger, but I gained almost a kind of beautiful abyss. As I lost the fullness in my face, I got in these great cheekbones,” she said. “I can’t tell you how many doctors try to sell me a facelift. I’ve even gone as far as having someone talk me into it, but when I went over and looked at pictures of myself, I thought, “What are they going to lift?”

To that end, the mother of three boys said that she’s steering clear of surgery, though she understands why some women opt to go under the knife.
“I have come close – but, frankly, I think that in the art of aging well there’s this sexuality to having those imperfections. It’s sensual,” she said. “[But] I don’t think there is anything wrong with cosmetic surgery at all. I think it’s great. But I don’t think it’s alright to distort yourself.”
“You can’t treat an illness with cosmetic surgery, and that’s why it would be great if there were qualified therapists in plastic surgeons’ offices, and that people would go to a therapeutic meeting before plastic surgery,” she added. “I think that should be part of the FDA requirement.”

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A team of paleontologists have discovered the fossilized remains of a 72 million-year-old dinosaur tail in a desert in northern Mexico, the country's National Institute for Anthropology and History (INAH) said on Monday.
Apart from being unusually well preserved, the 5 meter (16 foot) tail was the first ever found in Mexico, said Francisco Aguilar, INAH's director in the border state of Coahuila.
The team, made up of paleontologists and students from INAH and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), identified the fossil as a hadrosaur, or duck-billed dinosaur.
The tail, found near the small town of General Cepeda, likely made up half the dinosaur's length, Aguilar said.
Paleontologists found the 50 vertebrae of the tail completely intact after spending 20 days in the desert slowly lifting a sedimentary rock covering the creature's bones.
Strewn around the tail were other fossilized bones, including one of the dinosaur's hips, INAH said.
Dinosaur tail finds are relatively rare, according to INAH. The new discovery could further understanding of the hadrosaur family and aid research on diseases that afflicted dinosaur bones, which resembled those of humans, Aguilar said.
Scientists have already determined that dinosaurs suffered from tumors and arthritis, for example.
Dinosaur remains have been found in many parts of the state of Coahuila, in addition to Mexico's other northern desert states.
"We have a very rich history of paleontology," Aguilar said.
He noted that during the Cretaceous period, which ended about 65 million years ago, much of what is now central northern Mexico was on the coast. This has enabled researchers to unearth remains of both marine and land-based dinosaurs.
The presence of the remains was reported to INAH by locals in June 2012. After initial inspections, excavation began earlier this month. The remains of the tail will be transferred to General Cepeda for cleaning and further investigation.

King Richard III's rediscovered resting place is turning out more mysteries this summer. Excavators finally lifted the heavy lid of a medieval stone coffin found at the site in Leicester, England, only to reveal another lead coffin inside.
The "coffin-within-a-coffin" is thought to have been sealed in the 13th or 14th century — more than 100 years before Richard, an infamous English king slain in battle, received his hasty burial in 1485.
The team of archaeologists from the University of Leicester thinks this grave in the Grey Friars monastery might contain one of the friary's founders or a medieval knight. [Gallery: In Search of the Grave of Richard III]
"The inner coffin is likely to contain a high-status burial — though we don't currently know who it contains," reads a statement from the university.
The outer stone coffin measures about 7 feet (2.1 meters) long and 2 feet (0.6 meters) wide at the head and 1 foot (0.3 meters) at the feet. Eight people were needed to remove its lid.
The lead funerary box inside has been carried off to the university, where researchers will conduct tests to determine the safest way to open it without damaging the remains. But so far, they've been able to get a look at the feet through a hole in the bottom of the inner coffin.
The archaeologists suspect the grave may belong to one of Grey Friar's founders: Peter Swynsfeld, who died in 1272, or William of Nottingham, who died in 1330. Records also suggest "a knight called Mutton, sometime mayor of Leicester," was buried at the site. This name may refer to the 14th-century knight Sir William de Moton of Peckleton, who died between 1356 and 1362, the researchers say.
"None of us in the team have ever seen a lead coffin within a stone coffin before," archaeologist Mathew Morris, the Grey Friars site director, said in a statement. "We will now need to work out how to open it safely, as we don't want to damage the contents when we are opening the lid."
Richard III, the last king of the House of York, reigned from 1483 until 1485, when he was killed in battle during the War of Roses. He received a quick burial at the Grey Friars monastery in Leicester as his defeater, Henry Tudor, ascended to the throne.
Richard's rise to power was controversial. His two young nephews, who had a claim to the throne, vanished from the Tower of London shortly before Richard became king, leading to rumors that he had them killed. After his death, Richard was demonized by the Tudor dynasty and his reputation as a power-hungry, muderous hunchback was cemented in William Shakespeare's play "Richard III." Meanwhile, Grey Friars was destroyed in the 16th century during the Protestant Reformation, and its ruins became somewhat lost to history.
Setting out to find the lost king, archaeologists started digging beneath a parking lot in Leicester last summer where they believed they would find Grey Friars. They soon uncovered the remains of the monastery and a battle-ravaged skeleton that was later confirmed through a DNA analysis to be that of Richard III.
In an effort to learn more about the church where Richard was buried — as well as the other people buried alongside him — a fresh dig at the site began in early July.
A King Richard III visitor center is being built at the site and arrangements are being made to reinter the king's bones. The Cathedral of Leicester recently unveiled its $1.5 million (£1 million) plan to rebury the monarch in a new raised tomb inside the church, with a week of celebrations leading up to the reinterment.
