5) JOHN MIKEL OBI
John Mikel Obi, the Chelsea midfielder is said to be the current highest earning Nigerian footballer. He joined Chelsea in 2006 from Norwegian club Fc Lyn Oslo on a US$25 million. He is currently on US$120,000,(N20m), per week excluding bonuses, and income from participating at the UEFA Champions League.
The 25-year-old Jos born player owns mansions in Jos, Lagos and London worth about N800m. He has shares in top companies, and he recently launched a record label, MATURED MONEY MIND (MMM).
4) EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR
Former African player of the year Adebayor made the permanent move to the Spurs in August after a year on loan from Man City. In order to complete the deal, City had to agree to pay the striker a $6 million payout to make up for the lower base salary he needed to take to fit with Tottenham’s pay structure. His weekly wages dropped from $270,000 to $159,000.
His major sponsors are Adidas and Power Horse. According to the Sunday Times UK Rich List he had a net worth of $14 million (£9m) as of May 2012.
2) DIDIER DROGBA
Former Chelsea striker Drogba recently signed for Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua in a deal that will see him earn approximately $314,000 a week. Even at Chelsea Drogba collected a cool $8.6 million a year, and his net worth is estimated at $30.7 million.
The Ivory Coast Striker signed in June 2012 with Shanghai Shenhua of the Chinese Super League, which has been dogged by scandal and match-fixing. The two-and-a-half-year deal to pay him up to $300,000 a week turned into a six-month stint. The club’s owners battled for control and Drogba went unpaid. In January Galatasaray signed him to an 18-month deal.
He has an endorsement deal with Pepsi and has used the proceeds to build a children’s hospital in his home city of Abidjan. Other endorsement deals include those with Samsung, Nike and Orange France.
3) YAYA TOURE
Manchester City’s title-winning midfielder Yaya, the younger brother of defender Kolo, is said to have a net worth of over $20 million. He is the highest paid African player in the Premier League, earning $320,000 a week, which he tops up with image rights payments of $2.5 million a year and an additional $1.3 million bonus for Champions League qualification.
The Ivory Coast midfielder signed a new contract with Man City last April with a slightly reduced basic wage but loaded with incentives tied to the team’s success. This four-year deal ties Toure up with the club through 2017 and is worth up to $20 million a year in salary and bonus that will keep him among the sports top earners on the pitch.
1) SAMUEL ETO’O
Chelsea’s Samuel Eto’o is the current wealthiest foreign-born English premier league player with a net worth of $64M. He transferred from Inter Milan to small but ambitious Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala in August 2011 with swelled his wealth making him the highest paid footballer in the world at the time. Anzhi is owned by Russian investor Suleiman Kerimov, who is worth an estimated $6.5 billion.
Cameroonian-born Eto’o signed a one-year deal with Chelsea in August 2013 for an undisclosed fee, although several media reports claimed he took a substantial pay cut to move to the English club. His major sponsors include Puma and Ford are major sponsors.
