SWIFT Networks: 500 volunteers to test drive new LTE network

 

         The Editor  SWIFT Networks, a leading provider of high speed broadband internet and data services to enterprise and consumer customers in Nigeria, has announced that 500 volunteers will test-drive its brand new Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in preparation for its launch in Lagos, in the first instance.

SWIFT has built the LTE network on the spectrum resources of the Direct On PC which it acquired recently, enabling it to overlay the ultra-fast LTE network over its current 4G WIMAX network to offer higher access speed to its current and future customers.

 according to the editor "Wireless spectrum is a finite resource and LTE uses it more efficiently than other technologies, creating more space to carry data traffic and services and to deliver a better network experience. It delivers at least 10 times faster download speed than 3G and 4 times that of WIMAX 4G networks".

“This will be Nigeria’s fastest and most reliable 4G LTE network; we will not rush this launch and will take every care to ensure that we get it right the first time. Getting the most aggressive users from our current customer base to test-drive it will enable us to debug and fine-tune it to meet the exerting demands of our target customer base,” said Chukwuma Okoye, the chief operating officer of SWIFT.

Angolan Model Maria Borges tops Forbes Africa Magazine’s List for African Models

  Forbes Africa Magazine has released the list for the top African models for 2013 and topping that list is Angolan born model Maria Borges.
With appearances on the runway for designers such as Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs, Maria has been dubbed the most wanted African runway model of 2013.
With Maria at the top, the other African models that came close to snatching the title for number 1 include Ajak Deng from Sudan, Grace Bol from Sudan, Candice Swanepoel of South Africa, Liya Kebede of Ethiopia, Katryn Kruger of South African and Miss Universe competitor Flaviana Matata.

Nigerian boy flies to Lagos from home town hiding in airplane wheel cavity

  According to Reuters - A Nigerian teenager hid in the wheel compartment of an airplane and survived a half hour flight to the commercial hub of Lagos from his home town of from Benin, Arik Air said on Sunday.

Daniel Ihekina evaded airport security and snuck into the tyre section of the flight just before the wheels went up for take off on Saturday, airline spokesman Ola Adebanji said by telephone.
Passengers spotted him emerging from the wheel cavity in Benin and alerted the staff.
"How he got through security is something for the authorities to investigate," Adebanji said. "He's lucky to have survived it. Not many people can do that and survive."
He said that the plane only went up 21,000 feet because it was a short flight, increasing the boy's chances of surviving the thinner, colder air at high altitudes.
Adebanji said Ihekina was still being questioned by police and that he said his family had mistreated him. (Reporting by Tim Cocks; Editing by Louise Ireland)

Microsoft to end support for Windows XP, Office 2003 in 2014

United States technology company, Microsoft has announced the official end of support for Windows XP, Windows XP Professional for Embedded Systems and Office 2003 by April 8, 2014 and therefore urged its customers and partners to migrate to Windows 8 and Office 2013 platform.
Businesses in particular are feeling the most pressure to stay up-to-date with an increasing need to protect their data and manage all their devices while ensuring security and compliance. Windows 8 is Microsoft’s latest operating system for modern businesses, building on Windows 7 fundamentals such as speed, reliability and security while creating a modern platform designed for new generation of hardware experiences from tablets and innovative touch devices to traditional desktops and laptops.

“Migration is taken for granted until it is experienced. It is therefore wise for customers and partners to move with the changing technology trend by migrating to the Windows 8 and Office 2013 platform within the 8-month period.” She said. In recent times, it has been observed that PC desktops are now commonly found side by side with laptops, and newer form factors like Ultra books, All in Ones, and tablets. Writeable CDs are today replaced by cloud-based storage solutions like SkyDrive.  Connectivity and accessibility once limited to offices is now possible at home, in the car or even on a beach.
Businesses can now achieve greater productivity and mobility through Direct Access in Windows 8 by enabling remote users to seamlessly access corporate resources over a secure VPN tunnel through the Internet.

Pennsylvania: Mistaken Identity at Funeral

A Philadelphia woman has turned up alive nearly two weeks after her family held a funeral and burial for her. Services for Sharolyn Jackson, 50, were held on Aug. 3. Carrie Minney, Ms. Jackson’s mother, said the woman in the coffin looked identical to her daughter, except for the nose; she says the family assumed something happened to it during the embalming process. But Ms. Jackson showed up at a mental health facility in Philadelphia last week. A spokesman for the Philadelphia Department of Health said Ms. Jackson’s son and a social worker who knows her had viewed photographs of a woman’s body and identified it as hers. The body that was buried will be exhumed in hopes of identifying it.

Homemade Chicken Shawarma

It’s best to season in advance and refrigerate to let the flavors marinate. If life happened and you only had 15 minutes it will still turn out fine.

Since there is almost no oil in the recipe, it’s important to use a non-stick pan.
2 pounds / 1 kilo boneless skinless chicken thighs (don’t discard the fatty parts)
1 Tablespoon oil
¾ teaspoon cardamom
¼ teaspoon cumin
¼ teaspoon turmeric
¼ teaspoon paprika
salt and freshly ground pepper
Spread the spice mixture over the chicken, add the oil and rub with your hands so that all pieces are covered evenly. Refrigerate up to 24 hours or if using, set aside. Remove from the fridge 30 minutes before cooking so the chicken won’t be too cold. Season with salt and pepper just before sautéing.
Heat a non-stick wide shallow skillet. When very hot, add half the chicken and sauté’ covered on high flame (cook the chicken in two batches so that you don’t overload the pan and get steamed chicken). When the chicken is golden-brown on the bottom, turn it over and continue cooking until done. Sometimes you need to flip it a couple more times so that the chicken cooks thoroughly.
Wait 2-3 minutes. Transfer to a cutting board and slice as thinly as you can.
Serve with some tahini sauce and this salad:

Onion and Parsley Salad:

Peel half an onion and slice thinly. Salt, and mix well with your fingers. Place aside. Pick the leaves from a small bunch of parsley, add to the onion and season with sumac – if you have it. Mix well.
If there’s no sumac- add some fresh lemon juice to give it a kick.
* Sautéing on high heat causes the chicken to sear on the outside and steam inside, so that you get a spicy golden exterior and a soft and moist interior. Provided you didn’t overcrowd your pan and you preheated well.

When Chicago resident Katie Kerr posted her funny wedding invitation on Reddit last Friday she expected a few chuckles, but she had no idea it was going to turn into a full-blown social media sensation.

"We were just trying to make it different and unique. This is crazy. I didn't think it would be that big of a deal," Kerr, 28, tells the Chicago Tribune about her invitation, which has already received more than 400 upvotes.

Aside from the fact that it unconventionally lists four options for a "Yes" and four options for a "No," giving detailed reasons for each, the actually choices are knee-slapping funny.

A confessed social media lover, Kerr's RSVP invitation was first picked up by Huffington Post who contacted her two days after she posted it on Reddit. Their story link was shared on Facebook and Twitter and currently has over 12,000 Facebook likes. Shortly after, the media calls started flooding in.
"My phone really started blowing up after it got put on MSN," Kerr tells ABC. "It was even ahead of the royal baby."she said.

The average British child receives his or her first mobile phone at the age of 11, but nearly one in ten has a phone by the time they are five, according to a new study.
Children spend an average of £11 a month on mobile costs, less than the parental average of £19, though just a quarter of parents cap their offspring's mobile phone bill, research from uSwitch.com showed.
More than a million current under-16s had their first phone aged five, the study of 1,420 parents suggested.
When shopping for handsets, parents spend an average of £246 on themselves, more than the £125 they typically spend on the children's devices, uSwitch said. However, 15 percent of youngsters under 16 have mobiles worth more than their parents'.
"As well as arming kids with mobiles for emergencies and peace of mind, I'd imagine that many parents have bought their kids smartphones just to stop them commandeering their own when bored," said uSwutch telecoms expert Ernest Doku.
"Smartphones are getting more affordable all the time, with entry-level models costing as little as £7 per month with a free phone or £29.99 for a SIM-free handset."

He cautioned, however, that more parents should set limits on their children's phone bills.

according to report - A photo journalist was gang-raped in the Indian city of Mumbai, police said on Friday, evoking comparisons with a similar assault in New Delhi in December that led to nationwide protests and a revision of the country's rape laws.
The attack on Thursday night triggered protests and an outcry on social media, with many users shocked that it took place in Mumbai, widely considered to be India's safest city for women.
One man was arrested on Friday and 20 police teams were pursuing four men who had been identified, said Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh.

UNITED STATES GAMES RETAILER Gamestop has revealed that the Playstation 4 (PS4) is outselling the Xbox One two to one, suggesting that Sony's next generation games console is proving much more popular than Microsoft's.
Speaking to Gameindustry, Gamestop president Tony Bartel said that the "first to know" list for the PS4, which allows customers to receive updates on preorders and game announcements, is twice as long as the one for the Xbox One. According to Bartel, the PS4 "first to know" list has 1.5 million members, whereas there are 700,000 on the list for the Xbox One.
While this sees the PS4 proving significantly more popular in the US than its Microsoft rival, the Xbox One is unlikely to flop, with Bartel adding that this holiday season will see "the largest console launch in history", with both systems likely to fly off store shelves this Christmas.
We have yet to hear much about how PS4 and Xbox One preorders are stacking up in the UK, but with Sony announcing that preorders of its console have sold out in Blighty, with buyers now unlikely to be able to grab one on launch day, it seems like the PS4 is also proving to be the most popular in the UK.
Despite this, UK retailer Currys and PC World has said that it expects Microsoft's Xbox One console to be the best seller in the country this Christmas, outselling its seemingly more popular competitor. According to the firm, the PS4 will be this year's second best seller, followed by the iPad Mini, Google's new Nexus 7 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3.

The oldest licensed driver in New Zealand, and one of the oldest in the world, has been driving for 88 of his 105 years and has no plans to give it up, just as he intends to keep working out every morning in his home gym, and to keep regularly cooking meals for himself and his wife, who's 91.
"In fact, I don't think I'm old," Edwards says. "Not really."

Bradley Manning: I want to live as a woman

Bradley Manning, the Army private sentenced to military prison for leaking classified documents, revealed he intends to live out the remainder of his life as a woman.
“I am Chelsea Manning. I am female,” the Army private wrote in a statement read on TODAY Thursday. “Given the way that I feel, and have felt since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible. I hope that you will support me in this transition.”
Manning, 25, was sentenced to 35 years in prison on Wednesday after having been found guilty of 20 charges ranging from espionage to theft for leaking more than 700,000 documents to the WikiLeaks website while working in Iraq in 2010.

South African Angelo and Ethiopian Bimp have been evicted from Big Brother Africa The Chase.

I thought the organizers of Big Brother Africa would be easy on their own contestant, but I was shocked last Sunday when South Africa's Angelo was kicked out.
Now we are left with Nigeria's Beverley and Melvin, Ghana's Elikem, Namibia's Dilish and Zambia's Cleo. Truth is, it could be anyone's money at this point. Anyone but Beverley. Nigeria favours Melvin over her. My money would be on Dilish, though.
Angelo became the 22nd housemate to be evicted, bringing an end to the final couple in the House - Bengelo. The 91-day reality show on DStv ends this Sunday. It has been an unpredictable season with some of the promising characters and entertaining personalities crashing out of the game before they could say BBA.
Clearly at this point, in line with the show's unpredictability this year, whoever wins on Sunday will be no shock. Africa seems to be rooting for Elikem or Dillish, though.
