Van Gaal is on the brink, after a wretched run of six games without a win – including three successive defeats. It is understood that he could be shown the door, if United loses at Stoke City on Boxing Day. Mourinho was the best-paid manager in the Premier League, earning £12million a year. But the 52-year-old will have to accept a salary of around £6m a year – currently what Van Gaal earns – if he is to replace the Dutchman at United.
